5 Winter Activities We Love
Another successful tourist season has come and gone and we look forward to opening our doors again in March of 2023. We would like to thank everyone who stopped by to show us love and give our cafe a try last year. And while we are closed for the winter to spend time with our families and gear up for the upcoming season, we would like to share with you a list of the top 5 cool things to do in the Smokies this time of year.
1. Winter Hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Winter in the Smokies is generally mild with a couple of snow days throughout the season. In higher elevations, however, temperatures can drop quickly with the possible occurrence of extreme weather conditions. But don’t fret, we suggest bundling up for an easily accessible trail or a short loop walk with a nice view. Some of our favorite trails include Laurel Falls, Rainbow Falls, Alum Cave, and Porter Creek, all offering a refreshing winter wonderland experience.
2. Skiing in Ober Gatlinburg
Ober Gatlinburg is a local ski resort and the ultimate place for your winter fun! Atop Mount Harrison, you will enjoy snow skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, and snow tubing, along with shopping, entertainment, and dining. Even if you are not a big skier, a 2.1-mile ride up the mountain in the Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway will leave you breathless as you take in the panoramic views of the Great Smoky Mountains.
2. Pigeon Forge Snow
Who said that snow can only be enjoyed outside? You can always hit the slopes at America’s first indoor snow park in Pigeon Forge! Not a big fan of cold temperatures? inside pavilion stays at 60-70 degrees with the real snow made of 100% pure water that never melts! You can race down the slopes, tube, or even build a snowman - all without an entrance fee.
3. Winter Heritage Festival
Located just minutes from Elvira’s Fave in Townsend, TN, the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is home to many events and festivals. This year, connect with Appalachian history during the one-day Winter Heritage Festival taking place on January 28th. Visit authentic cabins, listen to the storytellers, and learn about native arts and crafts while soaking up a rich cultural experience.
4. Winterfest Lights in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg
Every year, from November to February, more than 5 million lights drape Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg for the Winterfest celebration. This year, the festival added the Wonders of Light Walking Trail which transformed the Riverwalk Greenway into a light show with 20 new musical displays. Here, you can see 25 ft tall installations, walkthrough arches, a colorful 25-foot-long caterpillar, beautiful flowers, and an Old Man Winter.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in the Smokies this winter. With a little bit of planning, you’re guaranteed to have a great time! Bye for now, and we’ll see you on March 1st!
